Around the shop
Shovel is waiting on top-end, Scout is getting new fuel lines and re-furbed fuel tanks. The fuel tanks in the Scout 80's are hidden behind a panel right in front of the rear wheels, inner fender basically. It's a pain in the ass to get them out, pounds of dirt in there and all the hardware is seized due to rust/grime. After awhile I just said screw it and deliberately snapped off the heads or ground them off. The tanks themselves are in decent shape, should be able to clean them up and re-install.

Gold
So it's been awhile since I have posted anything here again, but that's the nature of my life this time of year. I fight fire for the USFS, and my schedule is nuts. 600+ hours of overtime is not uncommon at all in this line of work in 6 months or so. I have had nearly 1200 hours of overtime in 6 months in the past. Not sure what the normal person works, but I'm pretty sure it's nowhere near that much. That being said I don't do much but work and sleep during the summer. I decided somewhere in there that the FXRP is just not my style. I bought it thinking it would be a good commuter, and it would be. Solid bike, reliable, fast, good brakes, plenty of room to stowe gear etc. So I sold it recently to a guy that will take care of it appropriately. I have been sub consciously looking for another shovel FLH for quite awhile, and found exactly what I wanted. These bikes just sit right, and fit my 6'2" frame well. This particular bike is a 1970. Original everything, paint, pipes, and so on. 27,000 original miles. Never been cracked open, original top end as far as I can tell. The cylinders still have original silver paint. All electrical still functioning as it should. I kinda figured it needed a top end rebuild, just by the way it sounded. Lots of pop out of right pipe, not much out of left. Sounds like running on one cylinder etc. I did a compression test and front had 125# rear at 25#. Looks like I'll be doing a top end job. The plan is to just do what is needed and keep the original heads, jugs, etc. It's going to remain as it should, 74", no chopping anywhere, no painting, just hopefully update the heads for modern fuel, and run it. Check it out.
Hopefully I can pic up some stock white hard bags for this thing. Not that stoked on the leather set up but they look alright and get the job done for now.

FXRP progress
Had some time to work on the FXRP this weekend. Got it most of the way back together after some suspension/powdercoat. When I pulled the bars and the wiring that was routed through them, I figured I would NEVER get the wires pulled back through. Planned on changing bars anyway. Decided instead to just get it back together! Used the ol' fishing line/weight trick to get the wires pulled. Worked flawlessly, and theres a LOT of wires to pull through the bars on an RP'. Bikes all wired back up, a few more things to do then it's on.

Why Not
Grabbed this '65 Scout 80 the other day. Half cab set up is sweet, slant 4, 3 speed. I need a plow for the driveway and I think I know where I can find a blade for this thing. If I don't? Oh well, everything works, runs REALLY good. Should be a fun little valley cruiser for me and the lady.

FXR Diet
Stock solo seat. Comfy but overstuffed, too much meat on it's bones.
Take seat apart, easy.
Seat pan, fits pretty much perfect, shouldn't need much trimming.
Seat foam. Too much material here. The area that the sharpie is pointing to is removed. I would have just shaved some off the top or bottom, but top is already shaped perfectly, and bottom is molded to fit pan, SO I'll try some out of the middle. Goal is to slim this seat down, and re-cover using the stock cover. Sneaky sneaky like. I'm going to cut the fat just a bit on the sides to match the frame/fender spear line... more later

Finally, back at it
Got the shop mostly set-up. After over a year without being able to weld I'm back in action! Gotta lay off the coffee though, trying to tig with the shakes doesn't work.
